A Long Night's Journey into Day and then Quickly into Night Again!

Well, we made it to Fussen in southern Bavaria close to the Austrian border near Ruette. Our overnight flight from Vancouver to Heathrow was delayed by 1 1/2 hours and, by the time we deplaned in London at 12:30, we had only 20 minutes to make our connection. Don't you love starting a vacation feeling stressed?  Not so much!  At least our Munich gate was in the same terminal and the lines at security weren't bad. Also, our Munich flight was delayed.  Phew!  So, 1 1/2 hours later we arrived in Munich at 6 pm and so did our luggage. That was a nice surprise.

Now, while our trip is about visiting Christmas markets, we sure didn't expect to see our first in the square outside the terminal.  We were greeted in Germany to the smells of chestnuts roasting over an open fire - truly!  Talk about getting into the spirit of things immediately.  The drive to Fussen went well in spite of it being night again. Where did Monday go?  At least the weather was clear and dry. We got on the wrong autobahn for a brief time but got sorted out once our Garmin figured out it wasn't navigating us from Oak Bay to Bavaria!  So much for the pre-planning I did before we left!

Once we checked into our hotel, we headed to the restaurant where I ordered Kasespaetzle - the German version of mac and cheese - and a Riesling. Yummy!  In hindsight, I sure wish we'd taken a photo of that market at the airport. We were just too tired and wanted to get on the road. We'll have another chance when we return the car in a week.

Here is our first beer (Kath) and Riesling (mine) - above - and my Kasespaetzle - below.  Also one of Kath relieved to have arrived and happy with her beer in hand.
