Thursday, with the weather sunny and clear, we set out to tour the countryside and get some photos of the surrounding area. First, we headed to Spieden so that Kath could visit a pilgrimage church there. Along the way, in Zell, we drove up a single-track but paved mountain road to get some photos of the Alps. Looking south, the mountains are located in both Germany and Austria which is less that 10 km away.
On our return, we drove through Hopferau and Hopfen am See (the latter is a pretty resort village on the lake which must be very crowded in the summer time.

We then drove into Austria into Fernpass to get some mountain photos. The main thing we both noticed is that the normally snow-covered mountains for this time of the year are quite bare. Global warming, it seems, is affecting things here as well. We were very close to the mountain called the Zugspitz - didn't get a photo though,
Thursday morning, the first things we noticed were the heavy frost - so thick it appeared to be snow - and the fog! Leaving Fussen, we took the side road that goes by Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein (2 of the 3 king's castles) and we were rewarded with a breathtakingly beautiful winter wonderland. I had never seen hoar frost like this. It was so lovely, particularly as the sun broke through the fog, that cars were pulled over everywhere so people could capture the scene. It was simply magical - very cold but unbelievably magical!
